About Us: How we got here

These days Chucktown Tours is one of three brands under the Charleston Tour Group. However, it wasn’t always that way. To understand a little about us, you need to turn back time. Our founder, motivated by his inclination to set ambitious goals and a deep interest in history, decided to pursue the difficult task of obtaining a history tour guide license in Charleston. With only three days before the test. He quickly familiarized himself with the city’s prerequisites, obtained the study guide, and committed himself to mastering the extensive history contained within its over 500 pages. He quickly immersed himself in rigorous study for numerous hours over three days in ambitious preparation for the exam. 

Despite failing in his initial attempt at the test, he remained determined, vowing to pass on the next available test date – three weeks later. In a now even more determined effort to achieve success, he not only intensified his study routine but he enrolled in nearly every walking tour offered in Charleston. Over the next three weeks, he participated in dozens of tours by dozens of tour companies, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the walking tour industry in Charleston.

This concentrated exposure provided him with a unique perspective that would instill a sense of purpose in his goal. The turning point occurred one morning on the seawall during a tour hosted by the largest walking tour company in Charleston. The guide inaccurately claimed that Fort Sumter in the harbor had sunk three stories into the island, a fact quickly recognized as simply impossible.

Witnessing the reactions of belief spreading among the people in the group, he realized the broken state of Charleston’s walking tour industry and the injustice being done to its guests. Someday, the people in that group will realize they were deceived. At that moment, the wonderful memories of their stay in Charleston will change, replaced by a feeling of sad deceit and angry embarrassment. These feelings of mistrust not only tarnish the city’s reputation but also negatively impact the workers in the various service industries supporting tourism. It was that morning, on that wall, that this story began, and Chucktown Tours was born.
